About the Position

Reporting to the Head of Systems & Engineering, the Design Engineering Manager will work to provide innovative system design & engineering solutions. In this role you will develop cost effective large scale next-generation solar power, as well as cultivate and manage a team of dynamic engineers focused on providing turn-key solutions for state-of-the-art commercial and utility-scale solar PV systems.

Primary responsibilities for this position include the following:

  • Review and validate technical documents, including electrical single-line drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, electrical designs, structural designs, site plans and O&M manuals.
  • Identify, prioritize and schedule project/design initiatives.
  • Manage the coordination and overall integration of technical activities in engineering projects.
  • Review, recommend, or approve contracts or cost estimates.
  • Develop detailed electrical and systems designs for commercial and utility scale PV systems including medium voltage or high voltage system interconnections, plant electrical collector systems and plant SCADA system.
  • Prepare interconnection applications, interconnection impact assessment studies, and other studies, not necessarily of electrical nature; needed to satisfy compliance with codes and regulatory requirements including NEC, and Ontario safety code requirements.
  • Support construction activities managing, submittals and COs, performing construction inspections, liaison with utilities, as built drawings etc.
  • Write technical sections of Project proposals, including technical descriptions of major equipment, work breakdowns, and sub-contractor scope-of-work.
  • Develop cost reduction strategies through innovation in system designs and engineering, applying value engineering, constructability and task analysis initiatives.
  • Define and organize a pool of external engineers and consultants, within different areas of expertise. And coordinate their activities with our in-house engineers.
  • Support projects from proposal to commissioning, managing engineering resources and performing technical engineering work.
  • Implement standards and procedures needed to generate drawing sets for all project phases, and deliver “For Bid”, “For Proposal”, “For Permit”, “For Construction”, and “As Built” electrical drawing packages.
  • Contribute with the definition and development of a quality policy manual, including procedures manual, and work instructions; in alignment with SW Corporate QA Policy. Contribute with the definition and development of documents such as system specifications, installation manuals, O&M manuals, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will possess the following combination of experience, knowledge, and skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, preference for Electrical, and no less than 8-10 years of commercial PV system design and power electric engineering. Preference for candidates who possess a PE license.
  • Experience in the design of medium voltage electrical systems. Experience in high-voltage systems a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing a team of highly skilled engineers.
  • Experience in construction and solar PV power plants or other renewable energy systems is a plus
  • Ability to develop electrical single-line diagrams, schematics, and system drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Experience in the design of SCADA and energy management systems using Modbus, DNP3 and other protocols. Experience is plant level communication systems and development of HMI operator interfaces.
  • Clear understanding of how National Electric Code is applied to modern PV systems including new grounding and wiring methods.
  • Experience in conducting load flow, coordination studies, arc-flash analysis, and grounding grid analysis using ETAP or similar software.
  • Review customer supplied drawings for proper engineering interface and utility interconnection.
  • Strong desire to bring best practices to the team, share your knowledge and expertise and enable your team members’ mutual success as the organization continues to grow.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
